How to start an internet radio station in 2025

Starting an internet radio station is cheaper and easier than most people think. You need three things: a stream server, an encoder, and content. Here is how to get on air today.

1. Get a stream server

You need an Icecast or Shoutcast server. Choose a bitrate (128 kbps is fine for music; 64 kbps suits talk radio) and a listener slot count based on your expected peak audience.

2. Choose an encoder

Any Icecast/Shoutcast-compatible encoder works. Popular free options include BUTT, Mixxx and RadioDJ on desktop, and apps for going live from a phone.

3. Set up AutoDJ

AutoDJ keeps your station running 24/7 when no DJ is live. Upload music, build playlists and schedule jingles so there is never dead air.

4. Add a player to your site

Embed the free player or now-playing widget so visitors can listen without leaving your website.

5. Understand licensing

Playing music publicly usually requires a licence from the relevant collecting society in your country. Check your obligations before you go live — the tools let you insert ads and jingles to support the station.

Going live checklist

  • Stream server created and reachable

  • Encoder connected and stable

  • AutoDJ playlists built

  • Player embedded on your website

  • Licensing checked

  • Testing at your expected peak load

Once you are on air, share your listen link widely — a public player page is the single best way to grow a new station.
