How to improve email open rates without spamming people

Open rates start with deliverability: if the message never reaches the inbox, nothing else matters. Fix the plumbing first, then the content.

1. Get authentication right

SPF, DKIM and DMARC (with alignment) are the entry ticket. Verify them with our free checker — misaligned records hurt even when each one passes on its own.

2. Protect your sender reputation

  • Never send from a shared IP with a bad history — use a dedicated IP you warm up.

  • Check you are not on a blacklist before a big campaign.

  • Keep sending volume steady rather than spiking then going silent.

3. Segment, do not blast

A smaller engaged list beats a large cold one. Send to people who opened recently first, and re-engage the rest separately — do not mix them into your main sends.

4. Write subject lines a human would open

  • Be specific about the benefit, not clever for its own sake.

  • Avoid ALL CAPS, excessive punctuation and spammy trigger words.

  • Keep it honest — a misleading subject trains people to ignore you.

5. Make unsubscribing easy

A one-click unsubscribe that works instantly reduces spam complaints, and complaints are what wreck a reputation. Make leaving easy and people will simply leave instead of reporting you.

6. Clean the list regularly

  • Remove hard bounces immediately.

  • Prune subscribers who have not engaged in months.

  • Use double opt-in so the addresses you hold actually want your mail.
